Why Coimbatore

Coimbatore, locally Kovai, sits in the foothills of the Western Ghats in western Tamil Nadu and is the state's second-largest city. Long called the Manchester of South India for its cotton mills, it is today a deep engineering, pump-and-motor and IT hub with a famously entrepreneurial, understated Kongu-Tamil character. It is consistently ranked among India's safest and cleanest cities. It is calmer, greener and markedly more affordable than Chennai or Bengaluru, with a pleasant climate and a strong family-and-temple culture. Your office at SVB Tech Park, Kalapatti sits on the fast-growing north-east IT corridor, where most of the city's tech workforce is based.

Coimbatore is a genuine medical hub for western Tamil Nadu and Kerala, so quality and choice are strong. Top private hospitals run cashless tie-ups with major insurers, so carry your card and confirm empanelment on admission. Pharmacies are plentiful and many run 24/7. For an ambulance dial 108, or 112 for any emergency.

Roads, autos & the daily commute

How people actually move around, and the honest commute reality from the office corridor.

No metro, by design

As a Tier-2 city Coimbatore has no metro, but it is compact and traffic is far gentler than the metros, so from the Kalapatti corridor most of daily life is a 15 to 25 minute drive.

The new elevated corridor

The Avinashi Road Elevated Corridor (opened October 2025, the state's longest flyover at about 10 km) bypasses the most congested stretch and sharply cuts time between the centre, Peelamedu, the airport and the IT side.

Autos & cabs

Autos everywhere (agree the fare or use the meter), plus Ola, Uber and Rapido bike-taxis; many residents simply keep a two-wheeler or car.

Airport

Coimbatore International (CJB) is in Peelamedu, on your side of town, about 7 km and 10 to 15 minutes from Kalapatti; being this close to the airport is a real perk of the location.

Prozone at Saravanampatti (one of India's largest horizontal-format malls, with a 9-screen INOX, closest to Kalapatti), Brookefields in the centre, and Fun Republic on Avinashi Road. Gandhipuram and Cross Cut Road are the bustling local markets.

Sport & the outdoors

Modern gyms, CrossFit boxes, yoga and swimming along the corridor, cricket and football turf grounds, the heritage Race Course for walks, and established city clubs for social and sporting membership.

Tamil is the everyday language, often the Kongu dialect, but English is widely used in IT and business, so you will manage easily at work; Hindi is far less common here. Coimbatore is more traditional than the metros, so dress modestly, especially at temples, greet elders respectfully, and expect a strong family-and-community ethic. A little spoken Tamil goes a long way.

Water source

Summer supply can be tight on the Saravanampatti and Peelamedu side, so borewell and tanker top-ups are common. Water is sweeter and softer near Vadavalli and the foothills. Ask about the building's source.

Monsoon (Oct–Nov)

A few central low points, around the Avinashi Road flyover, Lanka Corner and Race Course, can hold water in heavy rain. On the IT corridor this is rarely an issue, but ask.

Lease & deposit

This is the one to plan for. Owners typically expect a deposit of around six months on an 11-month lease, with a 5 to 10% increase at each renewal. Our Tamil-speaking consultants negotiate the deposit and the terms down for you and check every clause before you sign.

Bank account

Open a savings account with a major bank (corridor branches are easy to find); this unlocks UPI, salary credit and bill payments.

Mobile SIM

A Jio, Airtel or Vi SIM on ID and a photo, usually same-day. A local number is needed for UPI and OTPs.

Electricity & water

Power is TNEB / TANGEDCO; transfer the connection to your name. Confirm whether water is municipal, borewell or tanker, and arrange Siruvani drinking-water cans early given the hard water.

Cooking gas

An LPG cylinder connection (Indane, Bharat Gas, HP) or piped gas where the building has it; your consultant arranges it.

Internet

Home fibre from multiple corridor providers installs within a few days.

Domestic help

Cooks, maids and drivers are widely available and affordable, usually arranged through neighbours or the apartment community.

Vehicle re-registration

Bringing a car across states needs a no-objection certificate from your old RTO, Tamil Nadu re-registration and TN road tax; many transferees buy locally or use cabs to avoid the paperwork.
